Weather alert: Flash flood warnings issued for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward

Several cities in Miami-Dade and Broward are under a flash flood warning issued by the National Weather Service in Miami Wednesday afternoon.

Current flash flood warning

At 3:45 p.m. the National Weather Service in Miami issued a flash flood warning for a large region of Broward County. Thunderstorms producing heavy rain had dumped four and seven inches of rain over several hours on Wednesday afternoon. Additional rainfall topping two to four inches is possible in the following areas, which could trigger flash floods.

Here are the locations:

Broward: Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Davie, Plantation, Sunrise, Lauderhill, Dania Beach, Chula Vista, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Ravenswood Estates, Melrose Park, Estates of Fort Lauderdale, Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Washington Park, Broadview Park, Franklin Park, Port Everglades, Oak Point, Chambers Estates and St. George.

Earlier and ongoing flash flood warning

Around 1:20 p.m., radar picked up on heavy rains from thunderstorms on grounds that have already seen up to three inches of rainfall. An additional one to three inches is expected.

The flash flood warning, set to remain until 4:15 p.m., includes:

Miami-Dade: Aventura, North Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, Bunche Park, Opa-locka, North Miami, Surfside, Miami Shores, North Bay Village.

Broward: Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Hallandale Beach.

Flash floods, often caused by torrential rains over a period of time, can be life-threatening and catch people unaware, the weather service says.
