Feeling like it’s 100 degrees? How hot will it get in South Florida and for how long?
South Florida faced another hot and humid Monday, with temperatures that felt like 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.
Expect to feel the heat the rest of the week, too, with a chance of rain in the afternoon.
“It’s going to be a steamy one,” said Jennifer Correa, a meteorologist with Miami Herald news partner WFOR CBS4.
August is the region’s hottest time of the year, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. And Monday is the start of the average hottest week of the year, according to WPLG Local 10 meteorologist Julie Durda.
The temperature in Miami-Dade and Broward counties reached a high of 90 on Monday, with the heat index — how hot it feels — as high as 100, said National Weather Service meteorologist George Rizzuto. The rest of the week is forecast to see temperature highs in the low 90s, with a heat index between the high 90s and low 100s, he noted.
“Stay safe in the heat today! Most of South Florida will feel like temperatures are above 100 this afternoon. Drink plenty of water and take cooling breaks,” the weather service posted Monday on Twitter.
While this is perfect beach weather, remember to drink lots of water, and wear sunscreen and a hat. Also, if you’re not a strong swimmer, stay close to shore. There was a moderate risk of rip currents Monday across Atlantic beaches, which will gradually decrease in the upcoming days, Rizzuto said.
And in true Florida fashion, just because it’s sweltering hot outside doesn’t mean the region won’t see rain.
Forecasters expect South Florida will see some showers and thunderstorms this week, mainly in the afternoon, as is typical in summer. The rain chances are expected to increase later in the week, with up to a 40% chance of rain from Thursday to Saturday, Rizzuto said.
