With rain totals mounting, a flash flood warning has been extended in South Florida
The National Weather Service in Miami extended its flash flood warnings for both Miami-Dade and Broward counties until 1 p.m.
The advisory was previously until noon but continued rains pushed it back an hour.
Just before 9 a.m., meteorologists noted that rain gauge reports said that ongoing thunderstorms and the heavy rains across the counties have dumped between 6 and 11 inches of rain.
Another 2 to 5 inches are possible as the Potential Cyclone One crosses the state.
In a 24 hour period, the weather service noted highs of 11 inches so far in parts of downtown Miami and Brickell and off of Surfside, 8 to nearly 10 inches in and near Kendall, and more than 5 off Fort Lauderdale.
“Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly,” said NWS Meteorologist Sammy Hadi in his report.
The areas extend from Kendall and Key Biscayne in the south to Aventura in north Miami-Dade. In Broward, the flash flood warning encompasses Pembroke Pines to Boynton Beach.
Aventura police also had to close off several roads due to severe flooding.
These streets included Northeast 187th, 193rd and 191st to Northeast 29th Avenue.
