Hail in Miami? Area at ‘marginal risk’ for severe storms — and more pelting ice

Forecasters say there’s a “marginal risk” for severe storms in South Florida Monday, with the forecast calling for flooding rain and gusty winds, with a chance for isolated tornadoes and quarter-size hail.

Yes, hail.

The pelting ice was already seen (and heard) Sunday in parts of South Florida, with people posting videos of the unusual sight on social media. Now, we might get Round 2.

The National Weather Service says the strongest thunderstorms in Miami-Dade and Broward counties could have wind gusts greater than 58 mph, and possibly contain hail up to the size of quarters. Isolated tornadoes, watersprouts and localized flooding are also possible.

Forecasters say there’s a 50% chance of rain in Miami-Dade, with new rainfall amounts expected to be between a tenth and quarter of an inch. In Broward, there’s a 40% chance of rain. At night, rain chances in Broward could go up to 60%, with new rainfall amounts less than a tenth of an inch.

Forecast calls for hot temperatures, more rain later in the week

“Shower and thunderstorm chances will begin decreasing on Tuesday, with a little drier conditions establishing by Wednesday,” according to the weather service’s hazardous weather outlook.

It will also get really hot Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures as high as 90, according to the weather service.

“Then another front approaches the area in the Thursday-Friday time frame, and brings increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms,” the hazardous weather outlook states.

Basically, just have an umbrella with you all week to shield yourself from the rain, and give yourself some shade when it gets really hot. Or go chill in the Keys, where the rain chance ranges from 10% to 30% Monday through Thursday. The rain chances then go up to 40% for Friday.
