Weather alert issued for parts of Broward, Miami-Dade due to dangerous thunderstorms

Parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties are under a significant weather advisory due to strong thunderstorms that could lead to funnel clouds, small hail and wind gusts topping 45 mph.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Miami were tracking a strong thunderstorm over Melrose Park, near Plantation, that was moving southeast at 5 mph before 3 p.m.

Areas under the warning include Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Davie, Plantation, Hallandale Beach, Miami Gardens, Lauderhill, North Miami, North Miami Beach, Oakland Park, Aventura, Lauderdale Lakes, Dania Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, West Park, Wilton Manors, Lazy Lake, Ravenswood Estates, St. George and Estates of Fort Lauderdale.

Frequent lightning is happening with this storm. The weather service advises that people seek shelter indoors or inside a car.

The alert is extended until 3:30 p.m.
