It’s getting dark out there. Afternoon storms could bring funnel clouds to South Florida

South Florida from South Miami-Dade in Homestead north to West Palm Beach is in line for some strong thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Miami issued an alert that some of these storms could include strong, damaging wind gusts and lead to flooding.

Dark, ominous clouds had already begun to build in parts of Broward by noon.

CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez tracked a line of storms moving over Davie, Southest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes and near Hialeah that are producing heavy rain and lightning.

These storms in South Florida, mirroring a summer pattern, are expected to last through the rush hour, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. These storms, along with the frequent lightning, could boast wind gusts topping 35 to 45 mph and carry funnel clouds.

Marine statement

At 4 p.m. another strong line of storms loomed offshore in Fort Lauderdale and the weather service warned of potential water spouts.

A marine statement was issued for waters from Miami Beach to Boca Raton.
