You need to know 3 things about South Florida’s weather. And they’re not very pleasant

The weather forecast at midweek in South Florida sometimes feels like the playlist on a pop radio station. You’ve heard that song before.

The one that goes: It’s going to be “likely record heat” Wednesday followed by “a weak front” that will bring rain over the weekend. That’s how CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez played it Wednesday morning.

In this case, the new hook is that Sunday is Mother’s Day and it will be the soggiest day of all with a 90% chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.

The old record for May 6 is 93 degrees set back in 2010, Gonzalez said. “Our average high: 86 degrees. It will feel more like summer due to the sizzling sunshine,” she said on Twitter.

The concerning thing about the weekend storms — starting with the 60% chance Saturday — is that these could contain potentially severe thunderstorms for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, the weather service said.

The risks include flooding and turbulent marine conditions including rip currents (not that beaches are open yet in the tri-county area) are what we can look forward to as we dine indoors with Mom or think of Mom on her weekend.

The Florida Keys will also see some of this weather but the storm chances are lower — 30% to 50% Saturday and 60% Sunday.

Fire weather watch

Wednesday also brings a fire weather watch for South Florida from the National Weather Service in Miami.

“Relative humidities are forecast to plunge this afternoon ahead of the cold front which could result in enhanced to critical fire weather conditions particularly across interior portions of South Florida with greatest risk across metro and inland areas of Miami-Dade and Broward where a fire weather watch is in effect,” the service said.

Cold front Florida style

Did they say cold front?

Recall that Gonzalez also mentioned a “weak front” in her post. By cold front they mean a forecast low of 72 degrees for Thursday.

In May, we’ll take it and say, “Play it again.”
