Severe weather in South Florida, and then another change in the days ahead

Call Thursday’s stormy weather the price to pay for a weekend of comfortable temperatures.

The National Weather Service issued a take cover warning due to possible tornado activity in parts of Broward, including Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines and Hollywood until 2:45 p.m.

Also, Miami-Dade from Hialeah to Kendall is seeing nasty weather and warnings to be careful in case of funnel clouds.

According to CBS4 meteorologist Dave Warren, storms are in the forecast through much of Thursday in South Florida. The rocky weather comes ahead of a cold front that will bring a pleasing weekend of low humidity and temperatures ranging from 85 to 66 degrees Saturday and 86 and 67 degrees Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Miami adds that some of the afternoon storms on Thursday “could be strong or even severe with frequent lightning, gusty winds, hail, and locally heavy rainfall possible.”

Thursday afternoon, the weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Hialeah, Doral and Kendall until 2:15 p.m. as skies turned black and rumbling.

High winds took down some trees in the Kendall area as residents posted images on social media.

Storms in Broward county also had the potential to spawn funnel clouds, the weather service warned Thursday afternoon.

Warren said lightning had already preceded the line of storms Thursday morning in the Homestead area.

The weather service also issued a significant weather advisory for portions of Collier, Hendry and Glades counties over gusty winds, small hail, lightning, and heavy rainfall heading into the areas. There is also a marine warning and severe weather around Lake Okeechobee with winds topping 34 mph.

Highs Thursday, when it isn’t overcast, could hit 92 degrees in South Florida.

The Florida Keys are looking at a 40% chance of rain Thursday — lower than South Florida’s 60%.

After the dry, comfy weekend, the next best chance for rain is Wednesday, Warren said.
