Here’s when you should venture out in South Florida in this week of extreme weather
The temperature could feel like 105 in the 305 Thursday and that’s not the only extreme you’ll feel into the weekend.
Are you ready for the big chill?
We are being facetious because in mid-April in Miami, a coming Friday high of 85 degrees could never seriously be considered a “big chill.”
But in this topsy-turvy time where every day is a Monday, we will treat this brief dip in temperatures as something to celebrate.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, Thursday’s forecast high of 88 degrees will have heat index readings between 100 and 105 degrees.
Even at 10 a.m. it was already 85 degrees in parts of Miami-Dade and the heat index made it feel at least five degrees warmer — much as it felt on Wednesday, said CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez.
When to walk or run
If you are going to leave the comfort of indoor AC to walk or run — at a safe distance from your neighbors, of course (don’t run directly behind someone in their slipstream, for instance) — plan it for late afternoon when lows start to fall toward the upper-70s.
But then there is one other concern.
Chance of thunderstorms
A 30% chance of afternoon thunderstorms are possible in the eastern areas of South Florida and elsewhere in the state, including Lake Okeechobee and the Atlantic waters. A few of those thunderstorms could be strong over the northeastern areas of South Florida, with gusty winds up to 50 mph and heavy rainfall.
The chance of thunderstorms continue into the weekend — especially Friday’s 50% chance — before highs of 90 degrees dip a bit on Friday and then return Saturday and Sunday with lows in the upper 70s.
We do need the rain, our parched lawns seem to say.
Ocean currents
Oh, and there will be rip currents along the beaches before diminishing over the weekend, but that’s for the fish to worry about.
