The PortMiami tunnel has won the top honor in transportation projects.

Meanwhile, the people’s choice award went to another major Florida transportation project: the reconstruction of I-595, which included the addition of reversible toll express lanes in central Broward County.

Both projects are among the most expensive in Florida transportation history. The tunnel cost $1 billion and 595 cost $1.8 billion. The price tags include maintenance and operations over a number of years.

The awards were announced by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The grand prize and people’s choice awards include $10,000 cash each to be used for charity or to support a transportation-related scholarship program of the agency’s choosing. Both projects were overseen by the Florida Department of Transportation.

“We are used to, in Miami-Dade County, building world-class infrastructure as has been recognized at the port tunnel that just won a national award for the best infrastructure project,” said Javier Rodríguez, executive director of Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX).
