Traffic alert: Eastbound 836 reopens after shutdown caused a jam

Miami Herald File

Eastbound lanes on State Road 836 heading to Interstate 95 and downtown Miami have reopened after being shut down for nearly five hours Friday morning, according to reports.

A mechanical issue with a crane, part of a major highway reconstruction, closed the eastbound Dolphin Expressway at Northwest 17th Avenue. Westbound traffic also faced delays.

The eastbound shutdown was expected to run until about noon, but the stretch reopened shortly before 10 a.m., according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

But not before it caused major traffic issues.

“The morning drive will get very busy out there and see a lot of congestion,” Austin Carter, who reports on traffic issues for CBS News Miami, warned morning commuters.

“This is going to cause major delays,” Total Traffic Miami posted on X.

And it did. Traffic had been building in the Miami airport area, and the Northwest 27th Avenue corridor was backed up.

The cross-county highway spans from West Miami-Dade to a causeway to Miami Beach. During the morning rush hour, commuters were advised to swing over to the Airport Expressway, State Road 112.
