2 arrested after chase and flipped police car close Miami streets near Biscayne Boulevard
Two people have been arrested after a brief police chase that closed several blocks of Biscayne Boulevard in Miami after a police-involved car crash Wednesday afternoon.
The incident involved a pursuit related to a shooting investigation, according to Miami police spokesperson Michael Vega.
Miami police were first alerted to the SUV involved in the chase by Palm Beach County authorities, who said the woman driving and the man in the passenger seat were wanted by police.
On Thursday, the suspects were identified as 31-year-old Ariadne Rodriguez and 34-year-old Jonathan Lozano. Rodriguez, of the Lake Worth area, was behind the wheel of a white Audi Q5 that had been used during a shooting in Palm Beach County on July 30, according to police.
Miami police tried to stop the SUV with a “tactical maneuver” on 79th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, Vega said, but Rodriguez got away. Officers finally stopped the car on Northeast 82nd Street using another maneuver. During the second maneuver, a police vehicle crashed and flipped. The suspects’ car was also damaged and a private vehicle was grazed by a police car.
Both the driver and passenger were arrested. Palm Beach County authorities are investigating the incident.
Lozano was charged with resisting arrest without violence and Rodriguez was charged with reckless driving, battery and fleeing from police at a high speed. It is unclear how they if and how they will be charged in the shooting incident.
The officer inside the crashed police vehicle had minor injuries, police said.
A video posted on the Instagram account OnlyinDade shows a chaotic scene where multiple police cars and officers, many with their guns drawn, surround the suspects involved in the chase. The footage showed at least one person being taken into custody by the police.
