An SUV struck and killed a woman crossing Interstate 95 north during the Wednesday morning rush hour, shutting down several lanes near downtown Miami and Brickell, authorities said.

The pedestrian tried to cross I-95 and was hit near Northwest Second Street by a white Honda SUV, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho.

The woman died on the highway and the driver stayed on the scene, Camacho said.

The collision was first reported around 6:15 a.m. and three lanes north of Southwest Eighth Street was closed for several hours. The I-95 north ramp at Southwest Eighth Street was also shut down.

Take U.S. 1 or Miami Avenue to avoid the highway backups.
