Carjacking, police chase cause traffic mess near Golden Glades. I-95 reopens, man charged
A suspected carjacker shut down Interstate 95 for hours during the morning rush hour Tuesday morning after a police chase ended in a crash and the man barricaded himself in his car, authorities said.
Around 11:50 p.m. Monday, Darnell Paul, 27, stole a woman’s car from her at gunpoint in the 2700 block of South State Road 7 in West Park, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies found the woman where her car was stolen, and she told them she knew Paul.
Hours later, deputies spotted the car and a chase ensued. Paul crashed along the off-ramp of I-95 southbound at Miami Gardens Drive just before 3 a.m., the sheriff’s office said.
He refused to come out of the car for several hours — he was believed to be armed, police said. A spokesperson with Miami-Dade Police said the department used a robot operated by cops to help negotiate with him.
Around 9 a.m., he was handcuffed and carted off to jail. The nearly 10-hour dispute ended with no injuries.
Commuters on I-95 saw major traffic congestion as one of the main highways in and out of Miami-Dade was completely closed during the morning rush hour. It eventually reopened around 9:15 a.m., shortly after Paul’s arrest.
He was charged with armed carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and attempted murder.
