A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning near an elementary school just off Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. near Biscayne Gardens Elementary, 560 NW 151st St., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told the Miami Herald.

The child was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries, said Lt. Luis Sierra, a Miami-Dade police spokesman. Det. Andre Martin said the driver stayed in the area after the crash.

“The boy was crossing the street when he was hit,” Det. Angel Rodriguez said.

It was not immediately clear whether the boy attended Biscayne Gardens Elementary, but Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman Gabrielle Acosta said he is a student at one of the district’s schools.
