A hit-and-run crash near Miami International Airport seriously injured a driver Friday morning — shutting down several ramps of the Dolphin Expressway for several hours, authorities said. Police say the other driver is on the loose.

Around 4:40 a.m., a red Toyota car and a black Chevy SUV going in opposite directions on Northwest 27th Avenue crashed at the intersection with 11th Street, Miami police said.

After the crash, the SUV’s driver continued heading north on Northwest 27th Avenue, until he got out of the car and fled near 14th Street, police said. A man who was driving the Toyota “suffered serious injuries” but is expected to survive.

The SUV had front-end damage while the driver’s side of the Toyota was wrecked, footage from CBS News Miami and WSVN 7 News showed.

As of 9:30 a.m., police had not found the SUV’s driver.

The crash investigation closed the State Road 836 on-and off ramps at Northwest 27th Avenue, and 27th Avenue between Northwest 11th and 14th streets for more than three hours. A stretch of the expressway also shut down but was reopened shortly after the crash.
