1 killed, 1 injured after SUV crashes into slow scooter on I-75 in Broward: Troopers
One person was killed and another was critically injured after an SUV crashed into the rear of a slow-moving scooter on Interstate-75 in Weston, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision happened west of the I-75 and Interstate 595 interchange around 3 p.m.
A 49CC scooter with two on board was on the I-75’s center lane going north at a slow rate of speed and nearing Indian Trace while a 36-year-old man in a Nissan Rogue SUV was approaching them from behind, troopers said in a report.
The SUV’s driver “was unable to take evasive action to avoid a collision” with the scooter, troopers said.
The front of the SUV then collided with the rear of scooter, troopers said, causing it to overturn onto its right side as it slid in the center lane. As the scooter slid, it’s driver and passenger were thrown off from the vehicle, troopers added.
The man in the SUV stopped on the outside shoulder of the highway.
One of the people riding the scooter was pronounced dead on scene and the other was taken in a helicopter to Broward Health Hospital where he remained in critical condition Thursday night, according to the report.
“It’s unknown who drove the scooter because they were both ejected,” Lt. Indiana Miranda, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman, told the Herald in an email.
Troopers noted in the report that none of the people riding the scooter were wearing helmets, and that the driver of the SUV had no signs of impairment.
The collision shut down the northbound lanes of I-75 for several hours.
