A 20-year-old man was killed in an overnight crash on Florida’s Turnpike extension west of Northwest 27th Avenue/University Drive, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

FHP said the man was sitting in the passenger side of a 2013 Ford Escape SUV, stopped for a reason not yet known in one of the “southbound” lanes that actually run west at that point. The SUV was smashed in the rear by a semi truck with a 53-foot trailer. After being airlifted by Miramar Fire Rescue, the passenger died at Aventura Hospital.

Neither the semi driver nor the SUV driver, who had gotten out of the Ford, were injured in Tuesday’s 2 a.m. crash.

The crash cleanup and investigation had three lanes shut down as rush hour began. The closure was down to one lane by 9 a.m.
