The cleanup and investigation of a crash that killed one person and put another into critical condition had Palmetto Expressway southbound lanes closed near the Southwest 24th Street (Coral Way) exit throughout Thursday morning’s rush hour.

The crash on State Road 826 happened around 5 a.m. The Florida Highway Patrol closed three lanes until about 7:15 a.m., when a fourth lane was closed. The closure was back to three lanes at 9:15 a.m. All lanes were open again by 10 a.m.

According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho, a Honda SUV driver hit the concrete wall on her driver’s side, then careened across the highway and smacked the right concrete wall. When the man driving a Volkswagen sedan slowed down to help, a man in a GMC SUV smashed into the Volkswagen.

The GMC’s driver died. The Honda driver was taken to Kendall Regional in critical condition. The Volkswagen driver also was taken to a hospital, but FHP didn’t know his condition.
