A stretch of U.S. 1 in Broward is closed for the week. What to know before your commute
If driving through downtown Fort Lauderdale is part of your commute, make extra time for detours and increased traffic this week.
U.S. 1 from Southeast Seventh to Second streets, including the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel under the New River, will be closed around the clock until 5 p.m. Friday for “concrete wall pour operations.” The stretch and the tunnel were closed Monday morning.
Detours
The Florida Department of Transportation recommends the following detour routes:
▪ Northbound traffic: Take Southeast Seventh, Southeast Third Avenue and Broward Boulevard.
▪Southbound traffic: Take Broward Boulevard, Southeast Third Avenue and Davie Boulevard.
About the tunnel
The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel opened in 1960 under the New River; it replaced a drawbridge. It is named for a former Miami Herald editor in Broward County who advocated for its construction.
