A crash on the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County left two teens critically injured and eight other people hurt Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

An orange Hyundai SUV with five on board was traveling northbound on the highway near University Drive in Coral Springs around 1 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, its driver lost control of the vehicle, said Indiana Miranda, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman. Then, the SUV entered the left shoulder and collided with the guardrail.

In an effort to get back on the road, the driver subsequently entered the inside and center lanes before crashing into a white Nissan SUV with five on board.

As a result, Miranda said a 13-year-old girl was ejected from the Hyundai. On Sunday night, she was in critical but stable condition along with a 14-year-old girl who was in the same SUV. The Hyundai’s driver, a 39-year-old woman, and two other passengers ages 13 and 14, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Those in the Nissan — two adults ages 42 and 44 in addition to three children ages 7, 10 and 12 — also reported non-life threatening injuries.

The expressway’s northbound lanes were shut down for several hours, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
