A 35-year-old man was killed and another was injured in a wreck that split a car in half in South Miami-Dade during Tuesday’s afternoon rush hour.

The two-car crash happened around 1:30 p.m. in Kendall’s Country Walk area of Southwest 137th Avenue and 143rd Street, according to Miami-Dade police. Investigators say the crash involved a 35-year-old man who was speeding south on Southwest 137th Avenue in a black 2022 Honda Accord Sport and a 79-year-old man in a silver 2012 Toyota Prius who was heading north on Southwest 137th Avenue.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police said it appears that the 79-year-old in the Toyota was attempting to make a left turn at the intersection of Southwest 146th Street when he was struck by the Honda.

The force of the crash sent the Honda flying into a pole, which split the car in half. Both drivers were taken to Jackson South Medical Center, and one had “traumatic injuries,” according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Police said the 35-year-old man died from his injuries. The 79-year-old is in stable condition.

Police shut down the southbound lanes of Southwest 137th Avenue between 143rd and 146th street for several hours during the initial investigation and cleanup. Helicopter video taken by TV news showed the black Honda split in half and the other car with substantial front end damage.
