Sawgrass Expressway reopens after a BMW crashed and became engulfed in flames
The southbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway in Northwest Broward reopened Sunday night hours after they were shut down due to a fiery crash, according to authorities.
A 29-year-old woman was driving a 2022 black BMW when she lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons at around 8 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda said. The driver then got out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames.
Despite the major incident, the driver wasn’t injured, Miranda said.
The crash shut down all southbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway in Coral Springs, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
The accident happened at Mile Marker 12 in Coral Springs, before Sample Road, and traffic was detoured to Coral Ridge Drive, the department alerted.
Additionally, the expressway’s on-ramp at Coral Ridge Drive was shut down.
The expressway was fully reopened at around 10 p.m.
