Get ready to stop.

Miami-Dade police have announced a “have high visibility traffic education and enforcement campaign” that runs through New Year’s Eve.

On Friday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office DUI Task Force announced its own seasonal “high visibility saturation and enforcement operation” starting date this weekend and also running the rest of the year.

When and where

Broward deputies will set up checkpoints beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 through 5 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 18.

Where exactly?

“It will take place throughout Broward County,” BSO said in a news release.

The purpose of DUI checkpoints

“The goal of the operation is to deter impaired drivers who pose an immediate danger to the public as well as to cite traffic violators,” BSO said.

On Thursday, Miami police posted a meme to Twitter that suggested a reason why these saturation checkpoints are traditionally held overnight. Citing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures, driving at night in December 2020 was significantly more dangerous than daytime driving, with 30% of drunk-driving-related crashes happening between 6 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

The highway and safety agency released its 2022 Impaired Holiday Driving Social Media playbook for the period of Dec. 14, 2022 through New Year’s Day to help police spread the don’t-drive-drunk message.
