Miami Beach causeway reopens after car hits bridge guard gate Sunday afternoon

UPDATE: As of 5:55 p.m. Sunday, the causeway is open and the guard gate repaired.

ORIGINAL: A vehicle crashing into the bridge guard gate closed the eastbound side of the 79th Street Causeway from Miami to Miami Beach Sunday afternoon, Miami police tweeted at 3:02 p.m.

Alternate routes from the mainland to Miami Beach, especially the North Beach area, Surfside and Bal Harbour, are the Broad Causeway at Northeast 123rd Street, and Interstate 195, the Julia Tuttle Causeway, at Northeast 36th Street.
