A pedestrian on the tracks was struck and killed by a Tri-Rail train in Broward County early Tuesday, deputies said.

The incident happened shortly after 5 a.m. in the area of West Prospect Road and Northwest Ninth Avenue in Oakland Park, according to the Broward County Sheriff Office.

Tri-Rail cautioned that the crash would lead to major delays for passengers on the commuter service Tuesday morning. The commuter service temporarily suspended the Fort Lauderdale Airport shuttle, which takes passengers between the Fort Lauderdale airport Tri-Rail Station and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Tri-Rail used buses to take people between the Cypress Creek and Fort Lauderdale stations until the southbound train, the first of the day, was given the OK to continue running. The South Florida commuter service said it had 100 passengers on board the train and that no one was injured.

All trains, as well as the Fort Lauderdale Airport shuttle, are operating again.

BSO is investigating.
