An Apopka man was killed in a single car crash that had all lanes of southbound Interstate 95 closed south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as afternoon rush hour began Wednesday.

By 4:30 p.m., about two hours after the crash, the shutdown was down to two lanes.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Indiana Miranda said the driver of a 2010 Toyota Matrix veered off the road and onto the shoulder, then into a construction zone. After the Toyota careened off a steel support column, the front and undercarriage of the car smacked a rock pile.

The driver was dead when Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue arrived.
