A 3-month-old dies in a crash on Florida’s Turnpike in South Miami-Dade, cops say
A 3-month-old died and several people were injured early Sunday morning in a crash on Florida’s Turnpike in South Miami-Dade County, according to authorities.
All four occupants of a Ford sedan, including the infant and a 1-year-old, were taken to Ryder Trauma Center. The 3-month-old died in the hospital, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Alejandro Camacho said in an email.
A Miami-Dade police vehicle was also struck while assisting with the crash, he noted.
At 3:15 a.m., Camacho said a black Toyota sedan and a silver Ford sedan were traveling north on the turnpike in the area of Quail Roost Drive when the front of the Toyota collided into the rear of the Ford — where both minors were sitting.
The driver and only occupant of the Toyota, who was only identified by police as an adult male, was taken to Jackson South Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
About three hours after the crash, an officer was inside a police vehicle blocking an entrance to the turnpike when a civilian vehicle crashed into it, Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman with the Miami-Dade Police Department, said in an email.
Both the officer and the civilian driver were taken to Jackson South Medical Center for evaluation “as a precaution” since there were no visible injuries, Zabaleta said.
Authorities did not provide additional information.
