Lanes reopen after truck hauling excavator strikes turnpike overpass in Hollywood
A truck hauling an excavator struck the Sheridan Street overpass in Hollywood early Monday afternoon, causing several northbound lanes on Florida’s Turnpike to shut down, according to authorities.
A passenger of a nearby vehicle was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after the noon crash, Lt. Indiana Miranda of Florida Highway Patrol said in an email.
“The excavator being hauled collided with the Sheridan overpass causing concrete debris to fall, colliding with the passenger vehicle,” she said.
Traffic was backed up for several miles south to Northwest 215th Street as only the left lane remained open, Florida 511 alerted.
All turnpike lanes were reopened nearly five hours after the crash, Miranda said.
On Monday evening, one eastbound lane of the Sheridan overpass remained closed as laborers evaluated and repaired the damages, Broward County said in a statement.
“The county is helping to reduce traffic congestion in that area by synchronizing the traffic lights to maximize the flow of traffic,” the county said.
Drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route until repairs are completed.
