Fort Lauderdale gas leak closes parts of Sunrise Boulevard; expect delays and detours
A gas leak in Fort Lauderdale has shut down parts of Sunrise Boulevard causing miles of traffic backup Thursday afternoon..
Construction crews were installing fiber optics wires on East Sunrise Boulevard at Northeast 12th Avenue when they accidentally hit and ruptured a gas main, Fort Lauderdale Battalion Fire Chief Stephen Gollan said.
“The area is isolated and they are digging down to shut it off,” Gollan said.
As crew members work to repair the line, East Sunrise Boulevard from Northeast Ninth Avenue to Northeast 15th Avenue have been shut down and will reopen at 6 p.m. A Florida Department of Transportation traffic map shows heavy traffic building up along Sunrise Boulevard.
If you’re driving east, the best detour route would be using Northeast 13th Street to get to U.S. 1 or use Northeast Fourth Avenue to get to Northeast 26th Street. If you’re driving west, Northwest Sixth Street is the best street to avoid congestion.
