Wrong way crash on expressway leaves 1 dead, 3 injured including a cop, police say

A driver heading in the wrong direction on the Don Shula Expressway died after crashing into a Miami-Dade police car and a Jeep SUV, Miami-Dade police said Friday night.

The three-car crash early Friday afternoon — which also sent three people, including an officer, to the hospital — shut down a stretch of the expressway for hours.

According to police, an officer saw a Volkswagen sedan heading north in the southbound lanes of the Don Shula Expressway at the 152nd Street exit around 2 p.m. He called it in and made a U-turn to try to catch up with the Volkswagen.

The wrong way driver, who was later confirmed to be a man, had already hit another police car and a Jeep before the officer could do anything, police said. The crash happened near Killian Parkway.

Helicopter video of the wreckage from WSVN shows the Jeep slammed into the sedan that went on its side as the wrecked police cruiser was sent off on the shoulder. Afterward, debris littered the highway.

The driver of the sedan died at the scene. The two people in the Jeep and the officer were taken to area hospitals, but their conditions were not immediately known. Police had not released any of their names, however, the injured officer is a woman.

Southbound 874 was shut down at Kendall Drive. The shutdown caused miles of backup, news footage showed.

Thomas said it was not immediately known where the wrong-way driver entered the expressway.
