27-year-old man struck, killed by 2 cars on I-95 in Broward. One car fled, troopers say

A 27-year-old man has died after troopers say he was struck by two cars while trying to cross a foggy Interstate 95 in Broward County early Tuesday.

Skyler Mark Jones of Fort Lauderdale was attempting to cross the interstate’s southbound lanes from west to east when a 2014 Honda CR-V collided with him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The force of the crash left him — on his stomach — in the inside center lane by the Hallandale Beach Boulevard exit. He was then struck by another car that fled the scene, according to troopers.

It happened around 6:30 a.m., when Broward County and the rest of South Florida was still under a dense fog advisory.

Driving conditions were “very hazardous” with visibility dropping as low as 1/4-mile to “near-zero visibility” across South Florida at the time, according to the National Weather Service in South Florida.

It’s still unclear if the foggy weather played a role in the crash.

All of the interstate’s southbound lanes by Pembroke Road, including the express lanes, were shut down shortly before Tuesday’s morning rush hour was set to begin. Traffic was redirected to exit the interstate, according to Total Traffic Miami.

The lanes were closed for more than three hours and re-opened at 10:21 a.m., said a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman.

Troopers say the first driver who struck Jones came to a stop and stayed at the scene.

The second driver did not stop and kept driving southbound, troopers say.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
