Car-eating pothole claims two dozen victims on Florida interstate
Potholes are as common as alligators and sunshine in Florida. You probably drive over one every day without damage, other than a little jolt.
Then there’s this pothole on Interstate 4. It set out to eat cars for a living. More than two dozen cars were damaged on Tuesday night, according to police.
At 8:37 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol started getting calls about the pothole on I-4 near Longwood. When a trooper rushed out to find the hole causing all the commotion, the culprit was in the center.
After closing the right and center lanes, FHP, Road Rangers and the Florida Department of Transportation came out to assist drivers that fell victim to the hole.
Most of the damage involved flat tires, but one car had to be towed away with damage to the undercarriage, FHP said.
Road repairs continued throughout the night. At around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, the lanes were reopened.
FDOT told Click Orlando that “inclement weather may have played a part. The focus overnight is to ensure the safety of the traveling public and repair the roadway.
The size of the hole was not released.
A sinkhole also craved destruction Wednesday morning in St. Cloud, as it opened a 12-foot deep hole in the ground, WESH 2 reported. St. Cloud police said a bicyclist was hospitalized after falling into the hole.
