Truck driver in Florida Turnpike crash that killed three failed driver’s test 10 times: reports
Harjinder Singh, the truck driver accused of making an illegal U-turn that caused the deaths of three people on the Florida Turnpike this year, failed a commercial driver’s license test 10 times, reports say.
Between March 10, 2023, and April 5, 2023, Singh failed the test 10 times in Washington state before he eventually was issued the license, said a senior official in the office of Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier.

During the fatal Aug. 12 crash, Singh was carrying a valid California commercial driver’s license despite being undocumented. Singh, from India, had illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico in 2018.
It’s unclear how Singh obtained the California license. To get one, drivers must provide a document that proves they are in the U.S. legally, among other requirements, according to the California Commercial Driver’s Handbook.
Singh had held the Washington state license before his California one.

On Aug. 12, Singh tried to make a U-turn at an “official use only” area of the Turnpike about 19 miles north of Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County, crossing over into the left lane where a minivan was approaching, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The minivan slammed into and crumbled underneath the 18-wheeler’s trailer.
The crash killed driver Herby Dufresne, 30, and passengers Faniola Joseph, 37, and Rodrigue Dor, 54. The three were visiting South Florida, where they had once lived, before returning home to Indiana.
