Mom ‘pummeled’ by giant wave in kid area of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, suit says
A mom who says she was scarred by a “mammoth wave” while on vacation at Typhoon Lagoon in Florida is now suing Disney for $2 million.
The woman filed the personal injury lawsuit in federal court in the Eastern District of New York, saying she was “damaged in an amount that exceeds the jurisdictional limits of all lower courts,” according to the filing.
McClatchy News reached out to Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts for comment on the lawsuit May 1 but did not immediately receive a response.
The Long Island mom visited the popular Orlando water park in April 2022 with her family, according to the April 11 filing.
She was waiting for her 4-year-old daughter at the bottom of a slide in the kiddie section when she was “violently struck by a sudden and forceful wave,” the lawsuit says.
She said she was “pummeled” and dragged along the concrete pool, leaving her with deep scrapes similar to road rash.
The filing says Disney “should not have let the wave pool or ‘typhoon’ power waves enter the kiddie area and pummel the parents that unwittingly waiting for their young children to descend.”
According to the lawsuit, the injuries left the woman limping for the rest of her trip, stuck changing bandages that left her unable to go in the water or enjoy her vacation.
“Prior to the visit to Typhoon Lagoon, Plaintiff, a young svelte woman, had no scars or marks on her legs,” the lawsuit says.
But the wave left her with scars that made her “self-conscious,” forcing her to cover her legs at the price of being “hot and uncomfortable,” according to the filing.
The lawsuit accuses Disney of negligence, saying it should have known that powerful waves could spill into the kiddie area and cause possible injuries.
