21-year-old mad at family drives dad’s car into ocean, then walks away, Florida cops say
A 21-year-old who was upset with his family borrowed his dad’s car and drove it into the ocean, then got out and went to his mom’s, Florida authorities said.
The dad is now pressing charges, according to an arrest report from the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.
The dad told police he had let his son borrow his Subaru, but he never brought it back, according to an arrest report.
Instead, the 21-year-old drove to the beach at around 1:15 a.m. on March 26 and put a cinder block on the accelerator to get the car to crash into the water, the son told officers.
The cinder block kept hitting the brake, so the man made sure no one was around, got in the driver’s seat, turned the lights on and drove the car into the ocean himself, police said.
“While driving, he grinned and wished he could point his middle finger at his father and aunt,” police wrote in the report after interviewing him.
He left the Subaru floating in the water for police to find half an hour later as he walked about a mile to his mom’s home, officers said.
Police said they informed the father what had happened, and he estimated the car was worth about $6,500.
The son was charged in Duval County with felony criminal mischief exceeding $1,000 in damage.
