Blind 10-year-old dog is ‘young at heart.’ He needs a loving home in his senior years
A blind 10-year-old dog has a youthful spirit — and he needs a loving home for his senior years.
“I’m mellow, preferring a good snuggle over a game of fetch any day,” a Florida animal shelter said in an online adoption profile written from the perspective of Karl the dog. “Despite my age, my curiosity keeps me young at heart. I’m looking for a home where I can share my sweetness and companionship.”
The Humane Society of Pinellas said Karl is up for adoption after he arrived from another facility in January. Though the shelter doesn’t know much about his past, cataracts in both eyes caused him to lose his vision.
“Due to the progression, we cannot reverse the damage that has already occurred,” humane society spokesperson Peyton Davis told McClatchy News in a Feb. 3 email. “Due to (his) senior age too, it can be risky to put a dog like Karl through a surgery especially when he has adapted so well to his blindness already.”
The senior pup hasn’t let his blindness “slow him down one bit.” He has learned to navigate “surroundings with ease,” using his other senses to hear voices and feel when people pet him, the shelter wrote in its adoption profile and a Facebook post.
Karl is described as an intelligent mixed-breed dog with a “sweet and friendly” nature.
“He is a total sweetheart who has done well with all types of humans even kids,” Davis wrote. “He has also done well around most other dogs too. He is so gentle and mellow and would make a great companion for someone who can love him through his senior years.”
As of Feb. 3, Karl was among the animals waiting for new owners at the shelter in Clearwater, west of Tampa. Details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at humanesocietyofpinellas.org.
