A sixth grade student was walking alongside the road after being dropped off by her school bus when a car hit her, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The 11-year-old girl died the next evening, troopers said.

The afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 21, a school bus dropped off the Hernando County student, who then began walking north alongside an unpaved and unmarked road in Brooksville, according to law enforcement.

Then, a 65-year-old woman driving past in a Toyota Corolla hit the girl at about 3:30 p.m., troopers said.

The girl was hospitalized with serious injuries and died roughly a day and a half later, troopers said Jan. 23.

The Hernando School District confirmed the girl was a student but did not immediately comment on the incident Jan. 23.

Brooksville is the seat of Hernando County, about a 50-mile drive north from Tampa.
