Unlicensed driver elbows cop who caught her speeding in school zone, Florida cops say
A Florida driver with a suspended license broke multiple laws when she raced through a school zone in rush hour traffic — while staring at her iPad, investigators say.
Then she made matters worse by elbowing the deputy who stopped her, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The unusual traffic stop happened around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, outside the Ridgeview Global Studies in Davenport, the sheriff’s office said. Davenport is about a 35-mile drive southwest from Orlando.
“Deputies saw (the suspect) driving a black Nissan at a high rate of speed through a school zone while holding and looking at an iPad, and not wearing her seat belt,” the sheriff’s office said.
“She told the deputy sheriff who performed the traffic stop that she didn’t have her driver’s license with her.”
The vehicle was searched, leading to the discovery of marijuana in her purse and a driver’s license that had been suspended in September, the sheriff’s office said.
“As one deputy was taking her into custody, she became combative, and elbowed him in the chest,” officials said.
She became combative yet again at the jail and bit a detention deputy, the sheriff’s office said.
The 23-year-old woman faces 12 charges, including:
- Two counts of battery on an officer
- Two counts of resisting arrest with violence
- Three counts of resisting arrest without violence
- Possession and display of a canceled/revoked/suspended driver’s license
- Two counts of possession/use of narcotics paraphernalia
- Driving while license suspended
- Possession of cannabis
The woman lives in Clermont, about a 30-mile drive northwest from Davenport.
“Here’s a tip — if you’re driving illegally, you probably shouldn’t draw attention to yourself by speeding through a school zone while looking at a mobile device and not wearing your seat belt,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in the release.
