Hit-and-run victim jailed after shooting at car that hit his pickup, Florida cops say
A pickup truck driver victimized in a hit and run ended up under arrest after he chased the other car and fired shots at it, according to investigators in Florida.
The car crashed during the pursuit and the driver took off running, but left a passenger behind, the Orlando Police Department said in a Nov. 26 news release.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, and officers arrived to find the passenger held at gunpoint by pickup driver Edgardo Dejesus, 56, police said.
“Dejesus’ truck had been involved in a minor collision. ... The driver of the other vehicle continued west on Lake Underhill Road. Dejesus pursued the car to Yucatan Drive and Roberto Clemente Road, where he yelled for the driver of the sedan to stop,” police said.
“Dejesus then exited his vehicle with a gun. As the driver of the other vehicle began to turn around in the opposite direction, Dejesus shot at the sedan, hitting the car twice. After that, the driver of the sedan crashed into a ditch and ran from the scene. A passenger of the sedan remained with the vehicle and was confronted by Dejesus.”
The passenger was forced to lie on the ground, and Dejesus held him there with one foot on his abdomen, police said. Dejesus then took the passenger’s phone and struck him in the head, officials said.
Policed were summoned by witnesses who heard the gunfire and Dejesus quickly complied with orders to surrender, video shows. He was arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
Investigators have not released the identity of the driver who fled the car after it crashed.
