A man drove to confront his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, then he was shot in the head by a different man, Florida authorities said.

He was put on life support at a hospital with a non-survivable gunshot wound, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The evening of Sept. 4, the 39-year-old man was drinking with his girlfriend when they started arguing, and he began reaching out to her “previous boyfriends out of jealousy,” deputies said.

He called her ex-boyfriend and threatened him with a gun, then said he was driving to his house in St. Petersburg, according to investigators.

When he got there, the ex-boyfriend wasn’t home, but his 30-year-old brother was, deputies said.

The brother told detectives he saw the man’s pickup truck pull up outside and didn’t know who he was, so he went outside with his own gun, according to investigators.

He said the pickup truck driver was “yelling angrily” and reached into the truck’s console, then he heard and saw what sounded like the driver racking a gun slide, investigators said.

The brother told investigators “he was in fear for his life” and used his own gun to shoot the unknown driver in the head, deputies said. He then went inside and called 911.

First responders said they found the man in the driver’s seat outside the St. Pete home with a life-threatening injury and took him to a hospital.

The brother told detectives he shot the other man in self-defense.

The investigation is ongoing.

Pinellas County is part of the Tampa Bay area.
