Kids were playing in an abandoned house when they ended up making a gruesome discovery, Florida authorities said.

The afternoon of July 11, the children discovered human skeletal remains inside the Avon Park home, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release later that day.

They went to find a nearby adult, who then called the police, according to deputies.

Investigators said someone appeared to have been taking shelter inside the home, and the remains had been there for “well over a year.”

Detectives and the medical examiner are working to confirm the person’s identity and cause of death. McClatchy News reached out to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office on July 12 to see if the remains had been identified but did not immediately hear back.

Avon Park is about a 70-mile drive east from Bradenton.
