A Florida congressman was on a ladder trimming trees at home. Then he had an accident
U.S. Rep. Greg Steof Florida Steube was injured this week at his Sarasota property and required treatment at a local hospital, his office said.
“Congressman Steube was involved in an accident on his property ... and has sustained several injuries,” his Twitter account posted.
On Thursday morning, his office tweeted that Steube, 44, was “knocked approximately 25 feet down off a ladder while cutting tree limbs.”
He spent the night in the intensive care unit with “several serious injuries” that are not life-threatening. He remained in the hospital on Thursday.
“He is making progress and in good spirits,” a tweet said.
Steube’s office also expressed thanks to a person who saw the congressman fall and immediately called 911.
Florida Politics reported that Steube fell from the roof of his home and was discovered by a part-time staffer for U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan of Longboat Key.
Many of Steube’s fellow lawmakers offered words of support for his recovery, including newly elected Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. “I spoke with @RepGregSteube and his wife, Jen, this morning,” a post on McCarthy’s Twitter account said. “He is in good spirits, and our entire conference prays for a swift recovery.
Steube, a Republican, represents the 17th district of Florida, which includes all of Sarasota and Charlotte counties and parts of Lee County.
He was born in Bradenton and is the son of former Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube. Steube served in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate before his election to federal government in 2018.
