Are you cold? Florida sheriff invites people to book a warm stay — at the county jail
A Florida sheriff has invited people in need of a warm place to stay to report to a warm shelter. But his invitation is to those with outstanding warrants — and the shelter is the county jail.
The Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office posted the message to fugitives on its Facebook page:
“****Attention**** Due to the inclement weather we will be experiencing the next couple of days, Sheriff Bobby Schultz is offering those with outstanding warrants a warm place to sleep. All you have to do is show up at the GILCHRIST COUNTY JAIL and tell the staff your name and date of birth and they will be happy to assist and help you take care of that warrant before Christmas!”
Temperatures in Gilchrist County, in North-Central Florida, plunged to 26 degrees on Saturday morning and are expected to be even colder early Sunday morning for Christmas.
Florida has several showboating sheriffs who refer to their jails as motels. In Flagler County, Sheriff Rick Staly refers to the jail as the Green Roof Inn and has even put up a sign. And Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno calls his jail the Marceno Motel.
