Two teens were speeding on a Florida road late at night. Then came the curve, cops say
Two teens were killed in a crash after their car went airborne in Southwest Florida on Wednesday night.
According to a Facebook release from the North Port Police Department, officers responded to a crash at a little after 10 p.m. on a street near Interstate 75.
An off-duty officer had heard the crash from his nearby house, and went into the water with firefighters to pull the trapped people out of the car. But the heroic rescue couldn’t save their lives.
A tow truck removed the car from the water. The 17-year-old driver and 16-year-old passenger were dead.
The investigation shows the black Honda Accord took a curve while speeding. The car lost traction, slid, then vaulted off the bridge railing, sending it airborne and into the pond before it landed on its roof.

One commenter says that the tragedy involved two girls, although the police did not specify the victims’ gender or names.
“Very sweet kids. They were sisters,” said the social media user. “It’s very sad. Can’t release their names. They are both minors, but please pray for their family and friends. Losing two of their youngest babies to this.”
Another person gave props to the off-duty cop who came out in the middle of the night to help.
“The off duty officer should get recognized for his efforts. He or she is true hero even though his efforts were not successful!! Thank for responding when needed!”
A witness also reacted: “Saw this on the way home … people swimming in the water to try and help them. My heart is broken for the family who lost a loved one.”
