What’s going on with gas prices in Florida? A change in tax means a change at pump
Gas prices decreased in Florida over the weekend as the state started a month-long suspension of its 25-cents-a-gallon tax.
Sunday’s average price in Florida was $3.26 a gallon, the lowest since January, according to AAA.
“This gas tax builds on the previous downward pressure on pump prices, stemming from global recession concerns and underwhelming fuel demand,” Mark Jenkins, the auto club’s spokesman, said in a statement. “Prices are now beginning to dip below $3 a gallon at various gas stations in the state. While everyone might not be so lucky to see sub-$3 gasoline, all Floridians should expect a sizable discount this week.”
Nowhere was that more evident than at a RaceTrac station in the Lauderdale Lakes area, which posted gas at $2.91 a gallon on Sunday.
AAA data over the past week indicates that the least expensive gas in the state was in the Fort Walton Beach area at an average of $3.06 a gallon. The most expensive, AAA says, was found in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area at an average $3.47.
In the Miami area, gas prices dropped about 7 cents a gallon over the past week to average $3.33 a gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Miami was priced at $2.69 a gallon and the most expensive at $5.49.

But Florida’s trend isn’t a national one.
The national average price of gasoline jumped 11 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.78 a gallon on Monday, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
“While I’m hopeful there will eventually be relief, prices could go a bit higher before cooling off,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement.
