‘This is getting bad now.’ TikTok video shows pricey steak locked up at Florida Walmart
Maybe go to your local butcher next time?
A Florida TikToker was shopping at a Walmart last week and showed his followers a brief yet startling video that illustrated skyrocketing cases of retail theft in the U.S.
Michael Fromhold, with the handle @oakwood19136 holds up two Angus beef ribeye steaks priced at $20.83. The shocker: The meat is caged up with some kind of metal wire with electronic security tag attached.
“Yooo, you got to be kidding,” Fromhold says in a voiceover of the clip dated Feb. 6. “Walmart now has the steak locked up. Holy s---. This is getting bad now.”
It’s unclear where in the Sunshine State the store is located. Neither Fromhold nor Walmart returned a Miami Herald request for comment. But in another video, the TikToker is listening to music in Daytona Beach.
By Wednesday morning, the video had more than four million views as people tune in concerned about the spike in shoplifting of basically everything, including groceries.
Fromhold also posted a story on his TikTok about a man in New York City who was recently caught on video stealing $200 worth of steak from a Trader Joe’s, walking out of the place saying he was “hungry.”
Possible contributing factors causing the alarming rise in stealing since the pandemic began include a shortage of workers, which leaves more stores unattended. Also the online marketplace makes it easier for criminals to sell stolen goods.
