A small action that takes little time and effort could prevent you be from being a victim of crime in one Florida county.

A Florida law enforcement agency handed out a great tip for the post holidays: If you get a large, expensive gift such as a TV set or laptop, make sure the box it came in is clear of your home or at least hidden in a bag.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office posted the post-holiday PSA to promote its Burglary Box program, waste containers set up just for disposing of large trash so that would-be thieves don’t see pricey haul in front of your house as it awaits trash o recycling pickup.

The sheriff’s office has set up various green containers around the county where you can bring your cardboard garbage.

A box can give a big clue on what new stuff is now inside your house.

“Thieves look for those big-screen TV, computer and lawnmower boxes on curbs,” warns the agency in a post. “Protect your valuables!”

Reach out to your local law enforcement to see if there is a similar program in your neighborhood or county.

If you don’t live in Orange County near such a dumpster, you can also just break down cardboard boxes and haul them to a recycling bin, officials say.

The key is to make sure the box with the product’s name or description is not seen.
