For the love of dogs: A Florida woman leaves an ‘incredible gift’ to sheriff’s office
Tired of all the bad news out of Florida?
Here’s a bright spot brought to us by the folks at the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a Facebook post, the agency received a generous gift. Well, actually, the agency’s K-9 Unit.
Pamela Mobbs, who died in October 2020 at the age 90 left the police dogs a little over $32,000 in her will.
The Daytona Beach resident was a huge dog person, said the VCSO, and had a thing for German shepherds in particular.
Before Mobbs died, she specifically asked that her gift also be used to provide care for the canines, including bulletproof vests.
Her daughter Jane Mobbs, also of Daytona Beach, said that when her mother was growing up in England, her father had a fierce guard dog that watched over her.
“My mother wandered out into the backyard, and although her grandfather feared the worst, the dog was super gentle with her and protected her always,” Mobbs noted. “She had many shepherds in her life.“
The money will go to the 18 dogs in the unit. Their varied jobs include detecting narcotics; locating bombs; and tracking down the bad guys.
“This is an incredible gift to our agency and it represents this woman’s amazing love for dogs,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “Her legacy will continue to positively impact the Sheriff’s Office and our citizens for years to come.”
