3.8-magnitude earthquake rattles Florida-Alabama border, geologists say

An 3.8-magnitude earthquake rattled parts of Florida and Alabama on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, roughly 2.5 miles deep, hit the Florida-Alabama line just after 10 a.m., geologists say. It was centered southwest of Pollard, Alabama.

Residents in nearby Santa Rose County, Florida, reported feeling the tremors, along with others as far away as Pensacola, according to the USGS.

Though some reported feeling the quake, earthquakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude are considered “light” and rarely cause damage.

A quake’s magnitude is measured by the amount of energy released at the epicenter, the U.S. Geological Survey says.

No injuries were reported.
